Autobiography about Yen-Hua Lee
Beginnings
Having spent my early life on a farm in rural Taiwan, I identify strongly with Taiwan’s local culture. My first artistic medium was Chinese calligraphy, and my calligraphy teacher gave me the encouragement and taught me the concepts that set
me on the way to becoming an artist. Both of these early influences-Taiwan’s local culture and Chinese calligraphy -come through strongly in my art.
Education and Work Experience
After graduating from high school, I attended the national Taiwan Academy of Arts and received an Associate’s degree from the Department of Art and Design in 1996.At the National Taiwan Academy of the Arts, under the influence of photography instructor, I came to understand the power of black-and –white photography. This early inspiration has led me to incorporate photography into my concept of “ceramic collage.” From 1996 to 2003, I had worked at the National Taiwan Craft Research Institute’s Ying-ko Craft Center. This position had brought me formally into the professional world of ceramics research, development and manufacturing and I have applied myself diligently to experimentation in glazing, firing and shaping. In 2000, the National Taiwan Academy of the Arts became the National Taiwan University of the Arts and I was accepted into the department of Fine Arts to complete my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 2002, I graduated and was accepted into the Graduate School of Plastic Arts at National Taiwan University. In 2003, I got the full scholarship to study in the University of Dallas in U.S.A I hope I can challenge and find more myself in U.S.A so I decided to study abroad. In 2004, I got the Master of Arts degree in University of Dallas. In 2005, I transfer to Northern Illinois University to study MFA program. In 2007 May, I got the Master of Fine Arts degree in Northern Illinois University.
