Fu-Jow Pai (Martial Arts)

(for all grades)

Teacher: Kwan Shueyiu & Alex Lamas

The History of Fu-Jow Pai
Fu-Jow Pai (Tiger Claw System) is an ancient martial art based on
the movements of the tiger. Training includes aerobic activity, strength training, flexibility, practical self-defense, respect, self discipline, values, improved coordination and concentration. We teach students not only proper kicking and punching but self-defense techniques and Kung Fu forms.

The Original name of Fu-Jow Pai was "Hark Fu Moon" (Black Tiger System). It was renamed by the First Generation Grand Master Wong Bil Hong, to Fu-Jow Pai of Hoy Hong Temple. This was done in the memory of his master, a Shaolin Monk who's name remained anonymous because of Manchurian persecution toward the Shaolin order.

In the mid-19th century, Wong Bil Hong was challenged to a
dual. While battling in the courtyard of the Hoy Hong Temple, he and his adversary were separated by an old monk. Both were so overwhelmed by the superior Kung-Fu skills of this monk that they accepted the invitation to discuss their differences. After mediating on their disagreement, the monk accepted them as disciples and taught them hark Fu Moon (Black Tiger) Kung-Fu.

For the past 25 years Kwan's Kung-Fu has been the hallmark of excellence in the Martial Arts community of Westchester and has participated in numerous tournaments including Asian Cultural events though out the Tri-State area. Master Shue Yiu Kwan has trained many tournament champions and His Kung-Fu was recently featured in the July 2006 issue of inside Kung-Fu Magazine.

Beginning Percussion

(for grades 1-3)

Teacher: Andy Myers

Using simple methods, students learn the basics of drumming and hand percussion.  To play properly, children must develop self-discipline & accuracy, and the ability to listen to what others are doing at the same time they are:

By dividing beats and rhythms among players in sub-groups, the students learn about teamwork, and how essential it is to 'hold-down their part' in order for the ensemble as a whole to produce good-sounding music.

These are valuable life-lessons that students in this course will learn in fun & interesting ways.  (Often they learn as much about themselves as they do about the actual instruments!)
